The Raspberry Pi, while able to run several operating systems, the primary and what appeared to be the best supported is Raspbian, based off of the Debian Linux.
As I have some familiarity with Linux, i was comfortable with this. I decided to place my first order for a Raspberry Pi. Thankfully the choices are limited, and I quickly decided to get the Raspberry Pi 3.
The choice for this was simple, it was the fastest Raspberry in the product line, it had built in WiFi, it seems a perfect fit for my first Pi. I decided to order a kit, it contained what appeared to be useful things you needed to interface with something called a GPIO. We will talk more on this at some point.
The kit I ordered contained some wires, Lights, resisters, a case for the Pi, HDMI cable, power cable, a break-out cable, break-out T, as well as a 32 GIG memory card.
A few days later, my first Raspberry Pi came, little did I know what a tricky little rabbit hole I fell into.
I receive this package, and inside I find this tiny little box, with a small computer. The setup was simple, I simply plugged my Monitor HDMI cable into the Pi, hooked up a USB keyboard and mouse.
There is no on or off switch, this cane an issue and I will talk about this, but lets say its not safe to simply pull the power cable to the Pi, you can damage your operating system requiring you to restore or reinstall.
The kit I received contained a Micro SD card, on this card was a boot loader called noobs. This boot loader allows you to connect the WiFi to the internet if you so desire, doing so opens up sever other operating systems you can select from. As I had no interest at this time I did not bother to explore them. I simply selected Raspbian and went to town.
Important to note, when doing the install make sure you select t he correct keyboard for your country, or you might find yourself typing strange keys like I did. The keyboard defaults to GB.
After you have done the install, you do need to setup the networking again, it seems if you do it in noobs its only for noobs installation to allow you to download and install other operating systems.
I spent the rest of the night, until way past my bedtime, playing with the new toy that would soon consume me and my free time.
